So, Is Aaron Rodgers Vegan?
If you listen to comedian Pete Holmes’ podcast, You Made It Weird, you probably know more about him than you do about some of your closest friends. (Yes, we’re getting to the question, “Is Aaron Rodgers vegan?” – hang on…)
The premise of Pete’s podcast (he’s a first name sort of a guy) is basically that he talks super openly with whomever his famous guest is that week (you will know a LOT about his divorce). He is so open because he’s a seeker and he really wants to hash out life and all that it entails. He talks a great deal about spirituality, your life’s calling (comedy in his case), health and food.
When Pete interviewed NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, they talked about enjoying a vegan burger together at an L.A. restaurant (which Rodgers went back to the next day because he loved it so much). They really made that burger sound delicious.
Aaron Rodgers is not a vegan but – look! – he eats vegan.
Pete Holmes eats vegan, primarily. As he points out, it’s not that he is vegan. It’s that he eats vegan.
Eating Vegan & Being Vegan
This distinction is one that is loved here at Plenty Vegan. It’s an ethos that has not been found much in the vegan world but that is growing more and more in popularity. It acknowledges that we are human – complex, contradictory, rebellious – and that we come to a plant-based diet for different reasons and with varying amounts of strictness.
Eating vegan is not who we are (oh, we are so much more than that) but what we do. And *gasp* sometimes we don’t do it! Or, by some standards, we might not do it up to vegan par.
The Plenty Vegan approach to veganism allows for the Vegans After 6, the Meatless Mondays, the pescatarians even!
All or Nothing
In Pete’s case, he says he’s a “fleegan” (hilarious). So, he might get a little tipsy and that vegan diet just flees out the window as he bites into a cheese pizza.
Does this mean he should give up on aiming for vegan and start to eat meat and cheese primarily? Is that what we all really want? All or nothing? Please.
Aaron Rodgers eats vegan burgers. Is Aaron Rodgers vegan? No. But he eats vegan burgers and… isn’t that great?! What a world where one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL can eat a vegan burger, love it and talk about it.
A vegan diet can be great for the environment, human health, animal rights, your wallet, and so much more. It’s not a burden or a standard that is too high – it’s for us all. However much we can do it.
Notes:

- The vegan burgers are from Impossible Foods (trigger warning: website features video of something that sure looks like a meat burger being fried)
- In Pete’s episode with Adam Conover, he discusses his general ideology about veganism (and strict adherence to anything in general). Starts at min 56:45.
