Vegan protein powder is not necessary to your diet but a B-12 supplement is highly recommended. See below for some suggestions.
As we have discussed at length, there is an abundance of protein in a vegan diet. You will definitely not suffer from protein deficiency like so many meat eaters believe. Having said that, if you are looking to boost your intake because you are building muscle or just like to have a bunch of protein in your morning smoothie, you might like a protein powder.
Bob’s Red Mill Vanilla Protein Powder Nutritional Booster – It’s tricky for a protein powder to taste super yummy. They can be too chalky, usually. Bob’s powder is pretty good – give it a shot!
It can seem defeating to have to supplement your vegan diet with anything. You might want to get all your nutrients from food.
The deal is, many meat eaters are B-12 deficient too.
We all used to get B-12 from soil (which is where our food grows and where livestock grazes!). Depending on the soil, there may be no or little B-12 for us. Today, livestock are given B-12 supplements too because their pastures may not have enough B-12 in the soil. Even with this, it might also be difficult for humans to absorb any or enough B-12 from meat.
So, if we are skipping the animals that are given the supplement, we must take it directly. Many meat eaters should take one too.
Deficiency can lead to:
- Digestion issues
Here are a couple of B-12 sources that I’ve taken and liked. There is some debate about whether methyl B-12 or cyanocobalamin B-12 is a better source for humans but the difference in our ability to absorb either form seems to be small. Both of these recommendations are methyl B-12.
Jarrow Formulas Methyl B-12 500 mcg – This is a lozenge that you can dissolve or chew in your mouth and that you take every day.
Garden of Life mykind Organic B-12 Vitamin – I really like this spray but I prefer the lozenges for travel.
