Turmeric

« Back to Glossary Index

There are some spices that come up more in vegan cooking than others. One such spice is turmeric. Turmeric has a bright orange color to it and colors any dish it is a part of. So, sometimes vegan dishes use turmeric for its coloring property alone. For example, for some tofu dishes that are emulating egg dishes, turmeric can be used to get closer to the egg color. If it is used in a small amount, it may not even add flavor – just color.

Turmeric traditionally appears in Indian cuisine and curries.

There is some evidence that turmeric has numerous nutritional advantages as well – so that’s a real bonus!
